So I'm doing my taxes and I come across this gem on page 17 of the 1040 instructions:
"Kidnapped child. If your child is presumed by law enforcement authorities to have been kidnapped by someone who is not a family member, you may be able to take the child into account in determining your eligibility for head of household or qualifying widow(er) filing status, the dependency exemption, the child tax credit, and the earned income credit (EIC). For details, see Pub. 501 (Pub. 596 for the EIC)"
That's in the tax code. Because somebody put it there. On purpose. I know they probably had a good reason but... Wow, man, just... wow...
I like how it specifies "kidnapped by someone who is not a family member". Because the IRS doesn't get involved in felony offenses within the family... as long as you're not double-dipping on child credits.
